Thanks to Jung for mentioning the position:absolute detail. I was working on my page for days (with mostly correct Javascript) and none of the positioning succeeded until I set position:absolute in the CSS.
My final assignment is here.
So the moral of the story is that sometimes the Javascript is just fine and the real problems lie elsewhere.
I sure hope future lessons are learned with less pain involved.

one thing i noticed...im looking at you page on a widescreen monitor and i see some black and beige in your background. im guessing thats not supposed to be there?
Hey Jung, yeah, the black and beige parts were present in the original image I swiped for the background. I didn't really want them, but I never had the chance to Photoshop the image and get rid of them.
